ARTICLES EDITOR - Outside Magazine

Outside is looking for an experienced editor to join a cross-platform editorial team at Outside magazine and Outside Online. This role will help oversee our Adventure channel, ensuring that we cover the most important events, personalities, and trends in the realms of climbing, mountaineering, skiing, expeditions, and the environment. You will also lead Outside Online’s daily news coverage, assigning, editing, and writing stories that break news or provide valuable analysis. You will seek out and seize opportunities to cover underserved parts of the community.

The ideal candidate is someone with a passion for outdoor sports and environmental issues—or a willingness to immerse themselves in the subject matter—with national magazine or website editing and writing experience. This position requires strong reporting skills and the ability to work quickly and accurately to keep up with a demanding news cycle. We’re also seeking candidates with experience utilizing SEO best practices, tracking analytics, and digital publishing (we use WordPress).


  • Conceive, develop, assign, write, edit, and produce content across print and digital platforms.
  • Write and assign daily news stories.
  • Optimize content for SEO (whether its on-page headlines, meta titles, slugs, or body copy, you know what the page needs to rank in Google.)
  • Top edit freelancers and junior editor
  • Builds digital stories in the CMS
  • The ability to efficiently manage time, navigating competing demands and clearly communicating and prioritizing deadlines based on editorial demands, traffic goals, and business needs
  • The ability to write and edit quickly without compromising brand integrity, voice, or mission
  • Strong display writing and story packaging skills
  • Job Requirements
  • 5+ years’ experience in digital environment and/or editorial department
  • A strong body of editorial work
  • Knowledge of analytics tools and the ability to mine them for insights
  • Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $55,000 and $65,000. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission. Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away, sick leave, and more.
