The Staff Engineer - Mobile role will be responsible for leading a team of engineers in building our new mobile application. You will provide technical vision and direction to a team of software engineers (SE1 - Senior Eng.). Your responsibilities will include code reviews, technical direction, coaching, and mentoring junior engineers. Our platform is built on TypeScript React Native with Expo, Jest, and Detox in the toolchain. Our mobile app interfaces with our Federated GraphQL API to deliver a world class UI & UX to our users. You will work closely with Product and Design to bring the Outside Mobile App to life.

Responsibilities:

You start your day reviewing the latest PRs and Slack conversations to see what’s been going on. Alerts from monitoring or build issues will show up in the relevant channels. You might need to address something, or you might need to nudge one of your team into action.

Reviewing Github PRs, you provide advice to your team contributors, and questions to consider. Is this defensive enough? Should we log here for observability? Did you know about this particular Typescript idiosyncrasy or gotcha? Ask Product if they considered this edge case? Document the purpose of this section to the future developer stuck maintaining your code. You don’t get bogged down in syntactic or stylistic issues, you provide guidance and advice to your engineers that encourages them to write better, professional code that will run and be maintained for years to come.

During your daily stand up, you get up to speed with what’s on the menu for today. Listening for blockers, missteps, or opportunities to clarify questions around Product requirements. You might schedule some 1:1 time to pair up with your more junior staff, dig into a gnarly issue that the team has been butting up against, or grab a story and knock out some new functionality.

You participate in regular Core Platform engineering meetings with your Staff Engineer peers. This is when larger architectural discussions occur. You’ll work as a key component of the team in designing and planning out the future of the Outside technical landscape

What you will do:

  • Provide technical leadership and vision to Mobile development teams
  • Define and guide the development workflow and toolchain
  • Mentor engineering staff in mobile application development
  • Work with Product to develop new features
  • Work as a member of the the Core Platform Engineering team to lead development at Outside

Basic Qualifications:

  • You have 8+ years of software engineering experience in web or mobile application development
  • You have successfully deployed and maintained iOS and/or Android app(s) built with React Native
  • A collaborative team player who celebrates the success of your team
  • Have led a team of engineers in Mobile Development
  • Enjoy mentoring a team of engineers in Mobile development best practices
  • Can advocate for engineering priorities, balanced with Product priorities
  • Provide leadership and direction to all engineering levels (SE1 to Senior)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Developed or used a GraphQL API in a production setting
  • Experience deploying and supporting a long-lived mobile application

Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $140,000 to $190,000. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission .
