In this role, the Gear Editor will work across SKI’s several platforms (with a primary focus on daily digital content and driving Outside+ membership) to identify new and unique gear concepts to be executed as short and longer-form features, e-commerce packages, and reviews. You will be expected to cover gear beyond simply reviewing products. At minimum, at least 5 pieces of new gear content must be produced each week for the site.

You will play a key role in developing and top-editing fresh, on-brand copy and new ideas for gear content. You should be an experienced editor with a strong story sense, capable of producing articles and packages that both drive traffic and engage readers’ interests with the end goal of converting members to Outside+. You’ll also be responsible for identifying freelance writers and overseeing their work as well as managing the freelance budget.

You should have a passion for making skiers’ experience better and safer through what they wear and the products they use. You should be analytics-minded, comfortable monitoring, reporting traffic goals (via Google Analytics and Parsley); executing e-commerce strategies with affiliate links; and identifying editorial and social growth opportunities for the web site. This position will also include the production of a bi-weekly gear newsletter.

The Gear Editor will also be responsible for producing the annual Buyer’s Guide, in print, and online. This includes the production and management of the annual SKI Test, boot and binding testing, as well as apparel and accessory testing. You will also be top-editing the gear departments in print, to be repurposed online. All print responsibilities will involve working with the EIC and art department to determine design, photography, and layout.

Other copy editing responsibilities for print and digital content will be determined as needed on a daily to weekly basis. Intermediate to expert ability on skis is necessary for this position. This job will also include some travel, including international.

Responsibilities:

Conceive, plan, and execute ambitious daily gear content for skimag.com

Conceive, plan, and execute a host of new content franchises, based on top performing content and membership conversion

Create and execute big-idea packages and collections pages for web

Edit and project-manage Buyer’s Guide in print and digital formats

Determine and execute best practices for affiliate link content and monitor revenue

Assist in monitoring, reaching, and exceeding online traffic and affiliate goals

Work closely with all departments including sales, marketing, development, and editorial

Monitor and analyze metrics to advise on decisions about site content

Requirements:

At least two years' experience creating gear content for a digital-first editorial outlet

Expert understanding of latest gear trends and usage in the ski industry

Strong understanding of SEO, including how to optimize content to reach the top of Google

Creative headline writing should be your #1 passion on the job

Ability to manage of network of freelancers and budget

Familiarity working with WordPress

Solid understanding of SKI’s audience and editorial mission (including Outside+)

The ability to shift gears quickly in a daily web publishing environment

Proven ability to meet deadlines

A strong service-journalism sensibility

Ability to work closely with other editors and autonomously

Colorado Jobs: Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $45,000 to $60,000 . Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission.
