The General Manager, Content Strategy will work closely with the Chief Content Officer, your fellow GMs, and senior stakeholders in sales, marketing, and product to create goals and action plans that drive growth in membership, traffic, and ad revenue across the content organization. The GM is directly responsible for guiding the strategy and performance of the brands, topics and teams in the Outdoor Group, currently including Outside, Ski, Backpacker, Climbing, Outside Business Journal, Warren Miller Entertainment, and a central gear team. In this role, you will oversee an organization of approximately 50 editors and creatives who are organized into two teams – the Adventure and Action groups – with editorial directors who report to you.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in ushering in a new era for the flagship brand, Outside Mag, and the entire content department that continues its history of best-in-class journalism and storytelling while integrating forward-thinking influencers, culturally relevant content, stylish design, and digital innovation that will redefine the company and reinforce our position as a leader in our industry.

You will develop and manage budgets for content creation and staffing, and you will own an annual financial goal that requires a proactive approach to business development, partnerships, and special projects. One key special project you will inherit is Outside’s Gear Lab partnership with CU Denver. Another key role that candidates with the appropriate background will inherit is serving as Outside’s de facto sustainability strategist.

Like other senior executives, you will be expected to represent the company in industry initiatives and at functions, serving as a key leader and ambassador to the communities we serve. And as a member of the company’s Senior Leadership Team, you will collaborate with other executives to build strategy, culture, and market reputation for the company at large.


Our ideal candidate will have: proven experience driving multi-format content performance across digital and social; extensive experience leading teams of content producers and managing $15M+ media businesses; and a personal or professional background in (or adjacent to) the outdoor industry. They will bring a deep understanding of the storytelling that resonates with outdoor enthusiasts and outdoor curious audiences. They will bring an entrepreneurial instinct and urgency that shows up as a fearless passion for testing, failing, evolving, and moving forward. They will strive to maintain Outside’s editorial legacy and leadership positions while also reimagining our content in ways that will attract newer, younger, and underrepresented audience groups. General Managers at Outside rarely do the same thing every day, and part of the joy of the job is how varied the tasks and experiences are. While your duties are likely to evolve in response to market trends and business changes, your core responsibilities will include:

  • Grow audience, revenue, and membership as an inspirational and inclusive leader of our largest content vertical
  • Develop strategies and execution plans to achieve greater reach and engagement with our existing and incremental audiences
  • Stay abreast of trends in the outdoor industry, popular culture, and digital media

  • Partner with sales and marketing to support advertising success

  • Manage the financial performance of the brands and topical categories in your group

Professional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, English or other relevant degree
  • 10+ years’ experience managing complex media businesses
  • Extensive knowledge and networks in the outdoor enthusiast category
  • Fluency in digital, social, and video content best practices
  • Fluency in financial reporting and budget development

Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a salary of between $180,000 to $230,000. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission . Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away, sick leave, and more.
